Creating Assets for Artillery and Cavalry Units

To end this month’s stream of Unsung Heroes 1898 news, another development video has been posted highlighting the creative process of artillery and cavalry units. In addition, some minor quality of life changes have been added to the gameplay.

The Artillery Weapons of the Spanish American War

Artillery weapons represent a unique unit in Unsung Heroes 1898, as they are the most destructive units in the game, but also some of the most limiting (as they are entirely stationary). For this development sprint, two artillery weapons were created; the 1.65 inch Hotchkiss Mountain Gun and the Colt Browning Model 1895. The former operates similar to that of traditional cannons of the time and the latter represents one of America’s first machine guns. Both weapons were extremely valuable in winning victories for their respective battles. While the weapons are fully functional in the current build of the game, they are not animated at this time. This is because animation work will be done during the human model creation process, which will allow for more accurate and detailed animations. In addition, plenty of other artillery weapons are planned to be added at some point during the game’s development, including but not limited to the Sims Dudley Dynamite Gun, the Hotchkiss Revolving Cannon, and the famous Gatling Gun.

Cavalry in its Current State

The cavalry units are far from complete, but work was made to at least make them somewhat more presentable. Currently, a horse model has been created and implemented into the existing cavalry units, but the model lacks animations and realistic details. More work will be done over the next months to better shape the cavalry units.

Human Models

One of the last main aspects of asset creation needed for the game are the human models, which will replace the current capsule shaped soldier. Work will be made to make sure the models display historically accurate uniforms and highly detailed human meshes. It is planned that animations will also be undergone during this development sprint, but it is likely this could be delayed for later should the game’s development hit another hurdle. Once this development sprint draws to a close, you can expect another development video to be posted alongside another article from the Venomic Games website.
